What is a Curriculum Vitae

It is an important document which every job applicant has to submit for which position he/she is applying.

Nowadays, we see that most of the people find effective CV creation a complex task as they lack guidance. Thus we will endow you this guide to make your CVs stand out and ahead of your competition.

And we are doing it by sharing a post on “How to Write a CV for job application + How to format it” which will provide you complete guidance.

So let’s begin it with:-

1.  Points to Indulge in CV

It is well known to us that CURRICULUM Vitae is more than just being a resume so it should be correct, clear, complete and up-to-mark along with the detailed information about your present or past jobs and information on your educational background.

First Section

It should Start with your personal and contact information which includes:-

Your Name: – It should be complete and clear.

Phone number: –  It should be your present or working number so that it becomes easy for recruiters to be in contact with you if you got selected.

Email: – It should be your professional email created with a sophisticated email provider instead of any random as it creates a good impact. Also, don’t make the mistake of providing the email of your past or current work space. Just go for the creation of professional email if you don’t have any instead of providing any school time email which sounds unprofessional.

Social Media Profiles:- Now if you are also about to provide your social media profile links then optimize them before to providing as optimization helps them to look more impressive in the eyes of recruiters. You can do it by removing all the unprofessional content.

Address: – It should be your complete address where you are residing so that they can contact you in a case when you are inaccessible on your phone or email. Under this section, you can also share optional information if you want to share.

For instance:-

  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Marital
  • Status
  • Visa Status

Second Section

After personal information, the next section should be of work experience or employment history as it will show off your skills and accomplishments of tasks in the best manner.

Now this section includes:-

Job History:-  The job history should be in reverse-chronological order.  It means that the most recent job should be on the top of employment history. Also while mentioning the duration of each job, do mention the complete date like from November 2017 to January 2018, with entire months and years instead of sharing just years like 2017-2018 as it is an evil trick which leads to a big no and also creates a negative impact.

Job Responsibilities:- For each job, you should mention job responsibilities you were or are responsible. But keep in mind that more focus should be on the responsibilities of most recent one.

Achievements:- For each job, you should mention achievements possessed. It will lend a hand to reflect your professional payoff or impression.

Note:– If you are a fresher or inexperienced then you should continue with your educational details on the place of work history.

Third Section

The next section should be of education after employment history. This section should also be in reverse-chronological order.

This section includes:-

Name of institutions: –

While mentioning the name of the institutions keep the most recent degree on top. Also, keep in mind to mention the complete names of institutes and universities you have attended.

Years: – Also mention the years in the reverse-chronological order, again the most recent at first.

You should also include these details accurate:-

  • The degree of your education you possessed.
  • Your majors and minors.

Fourth Section

After education section, the next section you can add is your professional skills or qualification section. Under this section, you can mention.

Professional Skills:- The skills which you have learned during your professional working.

Certifications:  You can also mention the certifications, accreditation, skills related to computing, publications, presentations, lectures or any foreign Language proficiency, which can prove to be useful for you in getting the job.

Fifth section

The next section you should include is Award section. Here you can mention the awards and achievements in detail you have achieved during your work tenure.

Sixth Section

After Award section the next section should be of “other skills.” Here you can add those skills which are the volunteer, adding them proves to be icing on the cake.

Seventh Section

Next, to Award section, your section of hobbies and interest comes. It will help recruiter to know you as a person and to know your complete image. Probably adding your hobbies and interests makes recruiter consider as a more potential candidate than others (when your hobbies are such which can help in the job you are applying for).

Now when we are aware that, what to include in a curriculum vitae to make it efficient, let us head towards some other important points which are as follows:-

2.  Points not to Indulge in a CV

There are certain points which you need not include your curriculum vitae. For instance: – The reason of resigning previous company or designation, salary or referrals you can provide references if the employer has requested for it. Now when we know do’s and don’ts of effective CV writing let us move further towards the other main effective CV writing tips.

CV Length: –  The CV length should be of 2-3 and not more than that. You have to explain every point of your CV in clear, structured and accurate manner so that it remains short and the same time explaining enough. If you write lengthy CV or CV of more than necessary pages, it will make it appear overwhelming about yourself and which is also not a good thing.

Fonts and Fonts size: You should use best fonts which are easily readable. For instance: – Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, etc. Also, font size should be in 11 to 13.

Formatting:  Try to keep every section of your’s to be “effective CV” uniform. For instance: – If you are highlighting any designation with an underline, then every designation you were or at, should be underlined.

Spacing:  Keep in mind that the space between the words should also be uniform.

Accuracy:  Last but not the least, be sure to make it accurate thereby editing it before forwarding it to any organization or company. Check for grammar, spelling mistakes, tense, the name of the company, etc. You can do it with the help of various tools available on internet like Grammarly or with the aid of any friend.
